To compete globally, Australia must invest in innovation driven by the engineering profession, say Engineers Australia National President Trish White and Engineers Australia CEO Peter McIntyre.
Innovation is at the core of what we do as engineers. Engineers use scientific principles to create novel solutions to difficult problems, and we do this across virtually every sector of our economy.
As Australia evolves into a high-tech, digital knowledge economy, innovation is more important than ever and at Engineers Australia we know that engineering expertise will drive this. The world’s powerhouse economies are all firmly backed by a growing and capable engineering workforce, and this is where Australia needs to focus.
Innovative ideas are the beginning of technological advancement, but it is engineers who turn those ideas into practical reality. Australian engineers have been responsible for some of the world’s most valuable innovations – from wi-fi to the bionic ear and the black box flight recorder.
In the construction sector, engineering innovation means that buildings are completely built in the virtual environment before being created physically. In the energy sector, engineering innovation has delivered more power, more efficiently and more cleanly than ever before. True to the spirit of innovation, engineering advances mean that we can do more with less.
Future advances – in robotics, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, autonomous
vehicles, 3D printing, biotechnology and energy storage – will fundamentally change people’s lives. They are all underpinned by innovation and engineering excellence.
We know that the fastest growing occupations in Australia are those that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills. These are the areas that will ensure our country grows and thrives into the future. There’s no doubt that engineering innovation will be increasingly important as we transform our economy and
build a resilient and competitive industrial future.
To support the engineering profession in delivering the innovation Australia needs, Engineers Australia is proud to once again be hosting our biennial Australian Engineering Conference. The conference will bring together more than one thousand engineers from across the profession to share their experience and expertise.
Focusing on the future of engineering and innovation, conference highlights include an exciting line-up of speakers such as Tim Chapman of Arup Group, and Ray Kurzweil, Futurist and Google’s Director of Engineering. Delegates can also access a series of behind-the-scenes site visits to innovative engineering projects around Sydney.
The conference will bring together delegates from around the world and from industry, government and academia to make new connections, join forces and take the lead in unlocking innovative solutions.
The 2018 Australian Engineering Conference will be held in Sydney on 17-19 September 2018. Join the world’s leading engineering professionals, discover how our industry will transform and explore how you can prepare for the opportunities in our future.
